Marko Kosi Travu Detelina

This song can be taken literally but it has a deeper symbolic meaning than what one may initially assume.

The song begins with Marko cutting the clover field symbolizing life, abundance and continuity. We are introduced to Mara who is bleaching a piece of cloth showing that the she is also working but in a more domestic scenario.

Her mother standing in front of the house calls Mara representing social authority, custom and control. She asks Mara to take some medicine to Marko connecting both Marko’s labour, with Maras care.

However, Mara refuses signalling a breakdown of authority in this family. Mara states that Marko no long considers her a sister as the reason she won’t take the medicine to him. This reasoning is ambiguous as it may hint at an improper relationship between brother and sister, or some event that caused them to move apart.

So the mother heavily curses her son signalling a total breakdown of the family. The curse is an evil one asking for a snake to come out of the sloped grass where he is working to blind Marko.

As a result of the curse, a three headed snake emerges and attacks Marko.

In the end, this is a folk tragedy showing when family order collapses, the land itself becomes hostile.
